Ángel Jacinto Escalante (they/he) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Queens, NY. He is a published bilingual writer, community language educator, portrait & nature photographer, self-taught musician and music producer, field recordist, and documentary filmmaker. He was raised in el Bajío in Central Mexico and the Nuevo León/Texas border.

Ángel's debut as a film director and producer with the short En Común: Bookloving y Organizing was made possible with the support of the Third World Newsreel Filmmaking Production Fellowship 2023 and funding provided by Creatives Rebuild New York.

Since arriving in New York City in 2016, their photographic work has focused on non-normative bodies and identities, sex work, gender, pain, and spirituality. Their lack of access to formal and higher education in their field has shaped their approach to photographic work as a bartering trade, centering accessibility of creative work by shooting on DSLRs and self-publishing on zine-like formats.

MUSIC
Ángel has been a songwriter, guitar and bass guitar player, lyricist, singer, and performer for over two decades. Between founding and managing the old Mexican netlabel Nene Records, he has released multiple singles, EPs, and LPs on digital, tape, and vinyl formats with different acts from the MTYMX scene of the early 2000s in Mexico and the US. Today, they write music for Flamenco Rosado.

WRITING
Their writing has been included in the Austin Public Library's Aural Literature publication in Texas and El Paso's Río Grande Review, a bilingual journal of contemporary literature and art. They've self-published numerous personal zines, which are available at multiple Public Library Zine collections in the United States, with some titles available at the Sherwood Forest Zine Library in ATX.

LANGUAGE JUSTICE
Ángel has been teaching and creating curricula for Spanish language learners and heritage speakers since 2020. He is obsessed with the fluidity and rhythm of languages, especially when spoken together. Their teachings focus on grammar, vocabulary, and the psychology of Spanish as an ever-changing language.
